Feng Shui Tip of the Month – Feng Shui Gift Giving Dos and Don'ts
No matter which holidays you celebrate, whenever you are looking for gifts for your friends and family members, be on the lookout for the hidden Feng Shui meaning in what you choose. Here are my top five Feng Shui holiday gift giving "dos and don'ts," plus recommendations for turning around any negative meaning if you do receive any of the "don'ts."

Wallets, Purses, Briefcases:
If you do receive an empty wallet, immediately hide the largest denomination bill you can afford deep within the wallet and don't plan to spend it.

Knives and Sharp Objects:
If you receive a sharp object as a gift, hand over a coin to the giver to symbolize that you bought the object, and restore the bond between you.

Pointy or Thorny Plants and Flowers:
If you receive roses with thorns, be sure to remove them to symbolize a smooth romance or relationship.

Stunted Plants and Trees:
If you do receive a miniature and feel you have to keep it, surround it with flowering plants for balance.

If you receive any gift that makes you feel uncomfortable, consider selling or donating it rather than keeping it in your home.

Clutter Clinic -- Simplified Holiday Clutter Clearing
With the holiday rush starting early this year, I figured the last thing you needed was a clutter-clearing To Do list. Instead, I asked my clients and colleagues to share their simple holiday clutter-clearing and time-saving holiday strategies to help you find more time for celebration.

Here are nine of my favorites:
  1. "I place one piece of old clothing, one unneeded book, and other items in a bag in the trunk of my car each morning. At the end of the month, I have 30 items to take to Goodwill and it didn't take a lot of effort."
  2. "I never leave a room without picking up something that belongs in another one."
  3. "I go through my closet at the end of each season, and if I find something I haven't worn it either goes to charity or on Craig's List. My motto is now," if I don't use it, lose it."
  4. "I am constantly scanning-in old photos, putting the images on a disk, then getting rid of the old ones, including any old negatives."
  5. "I follow the rule 'One in - One Out.' Nothing new comes in until I make room for it by getting rid of something. And sometimes I get rid of something without replacing it. I figure the less I have, the less I have to clean."
  6. "While I'm shopping for others it's tempting to buy things for myself, but this "self-gifting" results in more things to put away. If I see something I think I really want, I put it on my wish list, or hold off until after the holidays to see if I still want it."
  7. "I keep clutter to a minimum by finding ways to enjoy the holidays with friends and family that don't involve 'stuff.' For our neighborhood holiday party, everyone contributes something to eat or drink and we don't exchange gifts, and for our family dinner we share stories instead of gifts."
  8. "Every year at the beginning of December I help my kids go through their rooms and pick out the toys they don't play with anymore and books they aren't going to read again, and then we donate them to children who are less fortunate."
  9. "I gave up on mailing holiday cards, and instead I write my holiday e-letter on New Year's Day when I'm sitting around watching football games."

Success Story – Michelle's New Love
Michelle's made some changes in her bedroom, especially removing the family photos, hanging new art, and getting rid of something from her childhood, with the results she was looking for.
Here's what Michelle wrote:
I wanted to share with you a Feng Shui success story. I was single for many years, lots of dates, but no one special was really coming out of the crowd. Following some of your online tips and those in your book, I made several changes, especially moving the photos of my family from the bedroom to the living room and cleaning out the closet. Boy, did I clean out the closet. I found a painting online that spoke to me of romance and passion and hung it next to my bed. Looking at your bagua map, I realized that my romance/love corner was occupied by the dollhouse I bought when I was 13, which was mostly gathering dust and serving as a nice perch for my two cats. Out went the dollhouse (to a high school friend's two young daughters, who love it) and up went two photos of pink and red flowers from my 2007 trip to Peru. Here's where the story gets interesting. Some time later, I met an amazing man on e-harmony. Where is he from? Peru. We have since moved to Peru, painted our bedroom pink, and hung up that same painting, which he also loves.

Ask the Feng Shui Maven
Q: Is it bad Feng Shui to buy items from antique stores and estate sales? I've been thinking about buying an antique bed but every time I find one I like, something keeps me from actually buying it.
A: Items from antique stores, consignment boutiques, and flea markets can carry strong energy from previous owners, and some types of materials absorb energy more than other items. The usual Feng Shui recommendation is to avoid buying an antique bed because it can absorb the energy of the previous owners who slept on it. If you have any doubts about an item, that's probably your own "Feng Shui intuition" telling you it's carrying energy that's not right for your home. Also, it's always good to consider a Feng Shui clearing for any antique or vintage object before you bring it home. Read more about space clearing rituals in the articles on my website,

Q: What does Feng Shui think about regifting? Am I just circulating a lot of old chi if I give away things I got as gifts but never really liked so I never used?
A: Personally I think that regifting is Feng Shui-friendly because it removes things you don't want from your home and sends them to a place where they are welcome. Just be sure to avoid regifting if you have negative feelings about the gift or its original giver, since you might be passing along your negative thoughts to the next recipient.

Q: I like to create a new vision board at the start of each new year. Can hanging it be considered a type of Feng Shui cure or remedy, and if so, where do you recommend displaying it?
A: A vision board, also called a dream board or treasure map, is a powerful way of using images to create the intention to attract something into your life, and that's also what Feng Shui is all about. I frequently remind my clients that "you are what you see," so, yes, you certainly can use your vision board as part of a Feng Shui adjustment. The ideal place to display your creation is in the Fame/Future area of your home or office. And another Feng Shui take on this is to arrange the images on your board according to the Feng Shui bagua. That is, place the images that relate to wealth in the upper left hand corner of the board, those that relate to love in the upper right hand corner, etc. Download a bagua from my website,

Purse Hangers From the Feng Shui Store
Where do you put your purse? There is a Feng Shui saying that "your purse on the floor means money out the door." You carry your money, credit cards, and checkbook in your purse, and in Feng Shui, putting these on the floor represents disregard for your wealth and income. Plus, scientific studies also show that your purse can be contaminated with numerous bacteria when it comes in contact with the floor.

Now, you no longer have to put your purse on the floor. The remedy is a Purse Hanger that lets you hang your purse safely from a table or desk. I have found folding purse hangers that fit neatly in your purse. It's the perfect gift for all the women on your list. The 2" disk opens to a sturdy 3" hanger. I stock them in elegant black and silver, plus I have a few available in assorted colors.

Beyond Feng Shui – 12 Things Happy People Do Differently
Studies conducted by positivity psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky point to 12 things happy people do differently to increase their levels of happiness. In her book, The How of Happiness, she describes the things that we can start doing today to feel the effects of more happiness in our lives. The rush of the holiday season seems like the perfect time to pause and reflect on what makes us happy.
  • 1. Express gratitude. When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value. And that's without having to go out and buy anything. It makes sense.
  • 2. Cultivate optimism. People who think optimistically see the world as a place packed with endless opportunities, especially in trying times.
  • 3. Avoid over-thinking and social comparison. If you can't avoid comparing yourself to something, try comparing yourself to an earlier version of yourself.
  • 4. Practice acts of kindness. Performing an act of kindness releases serotonin in your brain, so not only will you feel better, but so will people watching the act of kindness.
  • 5. Nurture social relationships. The happiest people on the planet are the ones who have deep, meaningful relationships.
  • 6. Develop strategies for coping. How you respond to the "stuff" you have to deal with shapes your character, so it helps to have healthy strategies for coping available.
  • 7. Learn to forgive. When you 'hate' someone and you're continuously thinking about it, those negative emotions are eating away at your immune system.
  • 8. Increase flow experiences. Flow is a state when you're so focused on what you're doing that you become one with the task.
  • 9. Savor life's joys. The simple things in life can be the most rewarding if we remember to fully experience them.
  • 10. Commit to your goals. Being fully committed where you can't change your mind subconsciously makes humans happier because they know part of their purpose.
  • 11. Practice spirituality. When we practice spirituality or religion, we recognize that life is bigger than us and embrace a connectedness with everything that exists.
  • 12. Take care of your body. Taking care of your body is crucial to being a happy person. If you don't have your physical energy in good shape, then your mental energy (your focus), your emotional energy (your feelings), and your spiritual energy (your purpose) will all be negatively affected.
