Feng Shui Tip of the Month – Prepare for the Year of the Dragon
The Chinese New Year celebration starts on January 23 and lasts for 15 days, ushering in the Year of the Dragon. Feng Shui Masters are predicting that 2012 will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, and intensity, with a stabilization toward mid-year. This will be a Water Dragon Year filled with the Feng Shui Elements Water and Wood, so to achieve balance in 2012 it's important to surround yourself with
the Fire Element, and especially shades of red and orange. Whether or not you celebrate Chinese New Year, here are a few of the Feng Shui changes you can make in early January that will clear out the old energy and usher in the new as we begin both the calendar and lunar new year.

1. Refresh and Renew. Display a bowl of 8, 9, or 10 oranges on your kitchen counter as a symbol of prosperity. Clean out the refrigerator and freezer and get rid of the outdated, congealed, and fuzzy things you can't identify. Replace dried out spices. Buy a new plant as symbols of a fresh start.
2. De-clutter and Clean. Dust everything, vacuum your rugs, and sweep your floors in the direction of the doors so you are moving the old energy out instead of back in. If you haven't used something in a year, it's time to move it out of your house. Be sure to wash your car.
3. Pick Up and Put Away. Pick up all the dirty clothes and do several loads of wash before the New Year, fold the clean clothes, and put them back in the drawers and closets. Empty all trashcans and the shredder to remove last year's stale energy.
4. Clear Out and Make Space. Clear off your countertops and desktop, and remove unneeded items from your shelves so there will be room for new things. Get rid of the expired prescriptions in your medicine chest as a sign that you will be healthy in 2012.
5. Change and Update. Treat yourself to new sheets, or at least put clean sheets on all the beds before the New Year. Put fresh towels in the kitchen and bathroom, and replace any that have become worn or threadbare.
6. Attract and Retain. Buy yourself a new wallet or purse, especially a red one, to attract wealth and prosperity. Hide away the highest denomination bill you can afford in your new wallet as a symbol that you will have ample money throughout the year.

Clutter Clinic -- 50 Ways to Get Organized
It's no surprise that the National Association of Professional Organizers established January as National Get Organized (GO) Month, because getting organized is high on the list of top New Year's resolutions for 2012. And once again to help you figure out what to do with all your "stuff," the Professional Organizers of New Mexico (PONM) have made help available in a complimentary e-book, Get Organized! Another 50 Tips for You. Here are a few tips from this e-book that are especially Feng Shui-friendly:

1. Prevent stuff from coming into your life and space. If you must add something, first determine where you will store it.
2. Act on things as soon as they come into your house to avoid clutter. That is, "don't put it down, put it away."
3. Keep a bag for donations in you closet. If you put something on in the morning and it feels uncomfortable, immediately place it in the bag.
4. Think twice about what you bring into your office from networking events. If you are not really going to follow up, don't take the information in the first place.
5. Keep all items to read in one place, like books, magazines, newsletters, research, etc., then schedule regular reading time.
6. Get off credit card mailing lists by calling the FTC at 1.888.5.OPTOUT.

Success Story – Clearing the Way For a Job Offer
Donna had been thinking about going back to work but couldn't figure out how to find the right job that would still give her time to be with her young children. She spent the summer and fall purging her home, especially her home office. I had advised her that if she wanted to move forward with her job search she needed to get rid of everything that related to past companies she had worked for but didn't want to work for again.

Here's what Donna wrote:
I have wanted to write for weeks now, but I'm happy to say I have been too busy. I cleared like crazy, and even got rid of things like pens from past employers with company logos on them. Two weeks ago I got a call from an interviewer at a company I had been saying "no" to because it was too far from my home. This time I agreed, and was amazed that they offered me an assignment the same day as the interview, making almost what I did before the kids were born. I'll start as a temp, which is good since this lets me try out working again. I believe I found this job because I got rid of all the past clutter, and especially all of those pens and pads of paper from the old companies. Thanks for showing me the benefits of Feng Shui.

Ask the Feng Shui Maven
Q: What is the meaning of the dragonfly in Feng Shui? Even though I never thought they were pretty, I find myself drawn to images of dragonflies and I have to surround myself with them. The dragonfly images started showing up a few years ago after much loss in my family, and since then there has been huge transformation in my life. It feels like the dragonflies forced me to stop and listen and have become a huge part of my healing and ability to help others.
A: In Feng Shui, the dragonfly is considered a predictor of the future, and similar to a butterfly or bird, it carries the energy of transformation. Perhaps the universe is showing you that there is even more change and movement coming for you. There will be quite a bit of transformation for everyone in 2012, so it will be good to have dragonfly, bird, or butterfly symbols near your front door. You can also take a look at the dragonfly in Native American symbolism.

Q: What can I do around the house in January to help ensure a good year?
A: It's important to open up lots of space in your home for new things to flow into your life. That means things like clearing clutter, pruning plants and removing dead leaves, and repairing all of those things you have been putting off. It's especially important to fix leaky faucets since leaking water represents wasted wealth.

Q: I park my car where it points directly at my bedroom. I don't sleep well, so I'm thinking this is not such a good idea. There is no other place to park that's off the street. Any suggestions?
A: Your bedroom is located where it's getting strong chi, making it difficult to rest and perhaps affecting your health. To stop the chi from hitting directly, place three large ceramic planters outside to act as a buffer between the car and the house. You could also hang a mirror on the wall in the bedroom to expand the space over the car, but only if you can't see yourself in bed from this mirror.

Purse Hangers From the Feng Shui Store
Where do you put your purse? There is a Feng Shui saying that "your purse on the floor means money out the door." You carry your money, credit cards, and checkbook in your purse, and in Feng Shui, putting these on the floor represents disregard for your wealth and income. Plus, scientific studies also show that your purse can be contaminated with numerous bacteria when it comes in contact with the floor.

Now, you no longer have to put your purse on the floor. The remedy is a Purse Hanger that lets you hang your purse safely from a table or desk. I have found folding purse hangers that fit neatly in your purse. It's the perfect gift for all the women on your list. The 2" disk opens to a sturdy 3" hanger. I stock them in elegant black and silver, plus I have a few available in assorted colors.

Overstock Sale. Free shipping when you buy 5 or more purse hangers.

Beyond Feng Shui – Remodeling Projects With High ROI
January is a good time to start planning your home remodeling projects for the coming year, especially if you are planning to list your home for sale and the housing market improves and you're looking for the highest Return on Investment (ROI). The consumer site surveyed remodelers and real estate professionals and determined the top five remodeling projects that had the best ROI when it comes time to sell. "If you're investing in your home specifically to help sell it, focus your dollars on the things that will really wow a potential buyer," says list founder Angie Hick. Here are the top remodeling projects with the highest return on investment:
1. The Kitchen - Whether a major remodel or cosmetic updates, expect an 85% return on your investment.
2. The Bathroom - A major update, especially a larger shower or tub, should yield an 80% return.
3. Decks - When your deck is in good shape and similar in size and condition to your neighbors', your return could be more than 80%.
4. Siding - Repairing or replacing siding adds freshness to your home and should get at least 80% back.
5. Window Replacement - Depending on the number of windows you replace and their energy efficiency, expect a return on your investment of at least 70%.
