Feng Shui For Cubicles
If you spend a large part of your professional life sitting in cubicle, a few simple Feng Shui changes can help you maximize the potential of your small space, create harmony around you, and help advance your career. One of the Feng Shui concerns about cubicles or "cube farms" is that they isolate without giving privacy, so the more you can personalize your space the more grounded you will feel. Here are six tips to help bring the practical magic of Feng Shui into your cubicle.
1. Position your desk so you can see the entrance to your cubicle when you are facing your computer monitor. This is considered the “power position” in Feng Shui. If you can't move your desk, place a mirror or small reflective object near your monitor so you can look up and see what is going on behind you, and symbolically you won’t be “caught off-guard” by your competitors or colleagues.
2. Add a living plant to your space. Since many cubicle-dwellers can’t see a window while they are working, it’s important to add at least one living plant to your cubicle to connect you with the natural, living world outside. Place the plant at least 3 feet from your computer to correct any negative electromagnetic energy that it generates. If possible, place a plant on the floor on both sides of your doorway to form a threshold and usher the positive chi into your space. Plants that work well in an office include peace lily, philodendron, and lucky bamboo.
3. Clear all the clutter from your desk and only keep current projects on your desk. In Feng Shui, clutter represents postponed decisions and the inability to move forward, so when you are surrounded by clutter in an office it’s hard to advance your career. Perhaps you can move some of your files to the company’s supply or file room instead of keeping everything in your small space.
4. Add artwork to your space that shows landscapes, flowers, and outdoor scenes. If you can, hang an image of a mountain behind you for support, and an image of moving water or a gentle waterfall in front of you to represent the flow of success into your career. Just be sure that the water is flowing into your office, not out of it.
5. Play soft music in your cubicle, especially if you work in a noisy office. If it’s possible, bring in a CD player, radio, or iPod, or consider adding a “white noise” machine or a small fountain with a soothing sound so you can tune out what is going on around you.
6. Sit on the best chair you can find, and be sure to clean it frequently since a dirty chair represents disregard for your career. If your desk chair is ripped or stained, replace it as soon as you can.
